Hello Miner / Bighorn Fans!
Read below on the latest for the winter sports programs at BSSD.
LPHS Boys Basketball
The LPHS boys basketball team started the new year with two big district wins taking down Townsend and Ennis both on the road. They were less successful with district opponents Manhattan and Townsend. As they remain in the middle of the pack in the 5B District, the Bighorns will look to finish strong with six remaining conference games to elevate their ranking.
Ebe Grabow and Isaac Bedway are leading the Bighorns in scoring thus far this season averaging 17 and 15 points per game respectively. Several other Bighorns have been contributing on offense as well. Juliusz Shipman and Aidan Germain are always threats to drive to the basket and when there isn't an opportunity they can find Bedway or freshman Ryan Malinowksi ready to drain a three. Grady Towle has also been a force on defense and the boards for the Bighorns. The boys will hit the road to Jefferson on Thursday and host Three Forks on Friday.
LPHS Girls Basketball
The LPHS girls basketball season has not been without its struggles. The ladies are still looking for their first district win. That has not stopped them from playing some extremely close games and showing a lot of heart leaving everything on the court. They also have several district games remaining to improve their position before the district tournament.
Senior duo Astrid McGuire and Vera Grabow lead the Bighorns in scoring averaging 11 and 10 points per game, respectively. Lately though, it has been sophomore Harper Morris who has been heating up offensively managing to lead the team in scoring the last two games vs. Manhattan and West Yellowstone. Many of these opportunities are supported by the elusive point guard play of Maddie Wilcynski and the three point shooting of Addy Malinowski. The girls will hit the road to Jefferson on Thursday and host Three Forks on Friday.
OMS Boys Basketball
The OMS boys season has started with a bang. First, the red hot 5/6 grade team have not lost a game, managing a couple of blowouts and pulling out three nailbiters all within 3-4 points. And, with 21 players that means that everyone is getting after it when they get their chance on the floor. They are particularly tenacious on defense with many of their points coming off steals for layups. With wins against Bear Canyon, Heritage Christian, and Home School so far, they will look to improve their record against Gateway tomorrow.
The 7/8 team has had similar success starting their season 2-1. The team is made up of a starting core of returning players supported by many athletes who are in their first year playing the sport. Point guard Steen Mitchell has led the scoring so far for the Miners and with fast break layups and spot up three pointers he has become a threat for the team's opponents. Post player Kenan Masonic has been there to pull in most rebounds off of misses and cashed in put backs and blocks for the Miners as well. Other members of that supporting cast such as Declan Mitchell and Jens Biggerstaff are also relied on both defensively and offensively. The boys will look to improve their record in Gateway tomorrow. Good luck guys!
