If your child does not ski with school groups, they will be marked as “UV” unexcused but verified absence. If your child cannot ski due to injury or for any other reason, the student must stay home and will not be counted absent. Email the absence(s) in advance.

Major Points to Remember:

  • Ensure your student’s gear is labeled with their name

  • Ensure your student has a disposable sack lunch. ONLY LPHS students can bring money for lunch on the mountain

  • Be at school on time or meet us on the mountain at 9:30 a.m. and check your child in with BSSD staff

  • If you are picking your student up - meet us at the Bus(es) at 2:35 p.m. and check out with  BSSD staff

Buses will load to leave the school at 9:00 am and leave the mountain at 3:00 pm to return to the school.

Students are asked to bring lunch in disposable bags & containers with their name and grade clearly printed on the outside. Children will be encouraged to put leftover snacks in their pockets for afternoon snacking, while everything else will be thrown away.

Rentals are provided free thanks to Big Sky Resort, for those who indicated the need on the permission form. All students must wear a helmet when skiing on ski days.

Students in grades 4K-5 are grouped by skill level designated on the permission form and each group will ski (no snowboarding) with an instructor assigned by the Resort and paid for by the PTO.

Students in grades 6-8 are grouped by skill level designated on the permission form and each group will ski or snowboard with an instructor assigned by the Resort and paid for by the PTO.  Middle school students have a choice of skiing or snowboarding, which you indicated on the permission slip.

Lone Peak High School students will free ski/snowboard with friends unless you requested a lesson.  Requested lessons will be grouped by skill level and each group will ski or snowboard with an instructor assigned by the Resort and paid for by PTO. The students taking a lesson will meet at the top of the stairs by ski school. All students taking lessons need to arrive by 9:30 a.m. All LPHS students are to be skiing/snowboarding at the mountain by 9:45 a.m. There is no formal check in, but if any student needs assistance at any point during the day, there will be a BSSD staff member at all times in Vista Hall to assist. Student ski groups can meet at the top of the stairs by ski school.

On ski days, ski equipment is dropped off in front of the elementary in the snow for grades 4K-3 or in the back of the elementary in the snow for grades 4-5 and sorted by classes or in the snow by the flagpole in the bus loop in front of the STEAM wing for middle school or high school. Kids that ride the bus to school will leave their equipment on the bus. Please make sure all of your child’s equipment is marked with their name. The school is not responsible for lost, misplaced or stolen equipment.

Once at the Resort, students either go to the Rental Shop in the Snowcrest Building for rental boots (skis or snowboards will be on the snow) or to their ski group. If your child is not taking the bus from school, meet their group at the top of the stairs to the right of Yeti Dogs between 9:30-9:40 a.m. and check-in with a BSSD staff member. Be prompt. You can drop off your child’s lunch there.

Each ski group has an instructor assigned and Big Sky School District staff gathers the kids into groups. Once gathered, the Resort instructors come to collect their group and they're off. Children under 6 years old must have a buddy to ride the lift with. Generally, 4K and kindergarten parents volunteer to be lift buddies. (Also some BSSD staff are assigned to be lift buddies).

YSL/BSSEF/Freeride – if your child is signed up for one of these ski teams and is in grades 6-12 ONLY, they must ski with their ski team coach. Parents are responsible for transportation to/from the mountain to meet their coach for practice which starts earlier and ends later than the school lessons. Attendance will be marked as “NS” non-sanctioned policy absence in accordance with the program.

At about 2:30 pm, the instructors bring their groups down the mountain to the BSSD staff members. *See attached photo of bus location. All Grade 4K-5 students will check out at the buses which will be parked in front of the Summit Hotel. All Grade 6-8 students will check in and out at the buses which will be parked in front of the Summit Hotel. Parents picking up on the mountain arrive no later than 2:35 p.m. and must check their kids out with BSSD staff members at the buses. All buses will return to school directly from the mountain at 3:00 PM sharp as half of the school will be in session on any given ski day. Be aware that bus route drop off time may be delayed on any or all ski days.

To ensure student safety we encourage NO end-of-day change of plans from what you signed up for on the permission form.
